Plant-based cuisine in London

“Mildreds Soho” is a renowned restaurant located in London, England, that specializes in plant-based cuisine and is a staple in the city’s culinary scene. Situated in the vibrant Soho district, it is part of the Mildreds chain, which began in 1988 and has since evolved from a vegetarian eatery to a fully vegan concept. The restaurant attracts a diverse clientele—from dedicated vegans to curious meat lovers and tourists—who appreciate the fresh, colorful dishes and laid-back atmosphere. It is a place that combines international influences with a modern urban flair and has made a name for itself through its pioneering work in plant-based gastronomy.

Vegan restaurant with creative dishes

The building itself is a narrow, four-story townhouse recognized as a Grade II listed structure, which recently underwent a comprehensive renovation to give it a striking exterior in contrasting blue and orange. Inside, guests are greeted by a mix of historical charm and contemporary design: high ceilings, dark wood paneling, and playful artwork create an inviting, slightly eccentric atmosphere that perfectly matches the spirit of Soho. The lower three floors serve as dining areas, while a ground-floor bar adds extra comfort. Notably, the private dining room on the second floor appears modern and bright during the day and transforms into an intimate oasis with candlelight in the evening—ideal for special occasions.

Best cocktail bar in Soho

Culinarily, “Mildreds Soho” stands for a creative, internationally inspired cuisine that is entirely free of animal products. The dishes are prepared fresh on-site every day and are characterized by their vibrant flavors and appealing presentation. A highlight is the “Makhani Cabbage Kofta,” a dish featuring cabbage dumplings in a creamy tomato-cashew curry sauce, often enhanced with okra and cauliflower, and typically served with pilau rice. The “Amba Chick’n Kebabs,” featuring a spicy Amba sauce that adds an oriental twist, are equally popular and manage to win over even skeptics of vegan cuisine. For those with a sweet tooth, the “Millionaires Chocolate Tart” offers a rich chocolate and caramel flavor, perfectly harmonizing with the lightness of the plant-based ingredients. The dishes are not only impressive in taste but also a visual delight, making the visit a thoroughly sensory experience.

International cuisine without animal products

The beverage selection is equally diverse and thoughtfully curated. The cocktail menu features both classics and original creations, garnished with natural embellishments like edible flowers—a detail that underscores the plant-based philosophy. The “Spicy Pineapple Martini” stands out with its fruity spiciness, while the “Pink Citrus Spritz” impresses with its fresh lightness. In addition to cocktails, there is a selection of wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options that perfectly complement the food. The restaurant is also known for its generous happy hour offerings, making the enjoyment of drinks even more appealing.

Cozy restaurant for special occasions

The history of “Mildreds” began in 1988 in a small location in Soho, with the vision of bringing vegetarian food out of the dusty corner of 60s clichés and making it modern, delicious, and accessible. Founders Jane Muir and Diane Thomas sought to create a place that offered fresh, international cuisine at a good price-performance ratio—a concept that immediately resonated. After moving to its current location and fully transitioning to a vegan menu in 2021, “Mildreds Soho” has established itself as a trailblazer that even “die-hard carnivores” can’t resist, as is often said. Today, it is one of six Mildreds restaurants in London, each with its own character but sharing the same passion for high-quality, seasonal ingredients and small, sustainable suppliers.

The atmosphere at “Mildreds Soho” is lively and casual, marked by friendly service and a young, dynamic clientele. However, it can become quite busy and loud during peak hours, which may not be to everyone’s taste—a fact often accepted as part of Soho’s character. The staff is known for their helpfulness and knowledge of the menu, which is particularly appreciated by guests with special dietary needs. The restaurant also offers a gluten-free selection and the option to order takeout, highlighting its flexibility.

I recently visited Mildred’s and was thoroughly impressed by every aspect of the dining experience. The restaurant deserves a solid 5-star rating for its exceptional service and creative cuisine. A highlight was the butter rum sticky toffee dessert, which was absolutely divine—rich, indulgent, and perfectly balanced. I highly recommend Mildred’s for anyone looking for a memorable culinary adventure.

Fantastic cocktails, some tasty mains and very disappointing desserts. Patatas bravas were a bit limp, not sure if undercooked or cooked and left out then reheated, otherwise we enjoyed our mains. Special mention to Sri Lankan Curry. The 7 of us were very disappointed with desserts, everything was greasy like eating solid coconut oil - maybe that's the charm of vegan desserts? Most of us are vegetarian so we're not prejudice to plant based but overall they were horrible. Let's start with "creme brule" - it was actually a gritty panacotta like jelly with a toasted top, really unpleasant texture on its own and nothing like creme brule. Chocolate ganache torte and ginger tiffin trouffles were very greasy, like eating mouthfuls of cocopowder suspended in coconut oil. That didn't go down well. White chocolate tiramisu was also like eating whipped coconut oil, we don't dislike fats however these desserts coated the whole mouth in grease, mouthfeel was overall bad. Sticky toffee pudding had nothing to do with sticky toffee pudding, missing the dates that are in the menu too?? It was a steamed light sponge with some carmel sauce, this was nice but nothing like the name. The restaurant is also overbooked, people are cramped like sardines, this makes everyone super hot and uncomfortable. We wouldn't go back but we do like the vegetarian recipe book.

Went with a friend for her birthday and unfortunately, we left feeling very disappointed. The restaurant feels small and cramped - sort of like a narrow corridor. And the tables are very close together so you don't get any privacy and the acoustics aren't great so you struggle to hear your own conversation. To be fair, I did enjoy the food but, we only had a main course and when we asked for the dessert menu, we were told that they wouldn't give it to us because by the time they brought the food out, we would have over run our allotted 90 minute slot. We said that we would eat it quickly, and the waitress went to see if that would be OK, but she came back and the answer was 'No'. I understand that times are tough in hospitality right now and it's hard to make a profit. Nonetheless, to refuse to serve willing customers before their allocated slot has expired, just to turn the table as quickly as possible is pretty unforgivable. Why would anyone want to go back after being treated like that? If you just want a quick bite to eat, then I guess this place would be OK although there are now many cheaper options that cater to that market But if you want a relaxing two or three course meal, particularly if it's a special occasion, I really can't recommend this place at all.

Excellent all plant based cafe in soho. We were there for their breakfast menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the guacamole pea focaccia, the cheesy bean and a kids scrambled tofu rainbow rice as well as a side of crispy rashers, coffees juice and a Bloody Mary. It was a delightful experience in there also with awesome staff explaining the menu as well as providing a highchair for a little one. It looked small from the street but opens into a great area toward the back. The Bloody Mary was the heart starter I needed after a really good espresso. Thanks for a great experience, we highly recommend Mildred’s SoHo.

Just amazing! If you're looking for a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, don't read the rest of the review, just go! An absolutely lovely place, snug and cosy seating but very atmospheric. The food was the perfect amount with fresh and tasty ingredients - a wide range too! Would totally recommend but do pre-book a table!
